Dr. Chris T. Pernell, a nationally recognized health equity advocate and former Chief Strategic Integration and Health Equity Officer at University Hospital in Newark, has filed a discrimination lawsuit against the institution, alleging racial and gender bias, retaliation, and a hostile work environment.

According to the complaint, Dr. Pernell was forced out of her leadership position in 2022 following what she describes as a “sham internal investigation.” The suit claims she was unfairly targeted after expressing interest in the hospital’s CEO position and for challenging systemic inequities within the workplace.

The lawsuit, filed in August 2025, names University Hospital and the New Jersey State Ethics Commission among the defendants. Dr. Pernell asserts that her removal was rooted in retaliation and discriminatory practices that undermined her role in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the state’s largest public hospital.

Allegations of Discrimination

Dr. Pernell alleges she faced harassment and marginalization tied to her race and gender. The complaint points to repeated acts of bias and retaliation that created a hostile work environment, ultimately leading to her departure.

The filing seeks remedies including reinstatement, back pay, restoration of benefits, compensatory damages, and policy changes to safeguard against workplace discrimination and retaliation.

Broader Implications

Dr. Pernell’s lawsuit underscores ongoing challenges faced by DEI leaders across the country. Advocates argue that while organizations often adopt equity initiatives, structural resistance to change remains prevalent. As a respected physician, public health leader, and outspoken advocate, Dr. Pernell’s case could have broader implications for how hospitals and public institutions address accountability in equity-driven leadership roles.

University Hospital has not yet issued a formal statement on the lawsuit.
